O LIVRO
THE BOOK
The collective memory of this territory is composed of intertwined individual memories and narratives. These narratives traces some common aspects of living in a community including the origin of the community’s name, the ancestral indigenous presence, historical conflicts brought with the rubber’s cycles, the difficulties to access basic services - most of them that should be provided by the government, their relationship with the river, with the food and all natural resources provided by the forest, with the city (urban area) and with time. The narratives show how each person has a singular way to express, uncovering the unique beauty of each story, which brings the wisdom of their way of living in harmony with the forest.
The aim of the project is to register some of these stories as a mechanism to preserve and to share their way of living and wisdom. In our book, you will find thirteen narratives from the residents of this community, especially from the elderly ones. The collected material includes photos, audios and videos that will be available within the digital book.
Here, to illustrate the format of the book, we selected short excerpts from four narratives. The book allows a deeper connection with each story.
PROCESS
The first stage of the project took place between June and September of 2019, when the facilitators attentively listened to and recorded the narratives. During the first half of 2020, we started the transcription of the narratives taking into account the oral tradition and transcreation as a support to approximate the reader to their perspectives.
The current moment is dedicated to fundraising to finalize the book. We expect to release the first copies to the Cuniã residents who will receive the result of this exchange with us, among themselves and with their future readers. The continuity of the project includes the distribution of book copies to public schools and cultural spaces in Porto Velho. In addition, the general public will be free access to the digital version of the book on this website (avaiable in portuguese, english and spanish).
SUPPORT
The project has Institutional support from ICMBio (Chico Mendes Institute for Conservation of Biodiversity) and received extra support through UNDP (United Nations Development Program), which enabled a storytelling event in the community. The result of this event was a breakfast with the residents, where people shared their memories and experiences while we recorded their narratives.
During the first stage, in 2019, the project was presented at the annual Council meeting between ICMBio and RESEX Lago do Cuniã, to make sure residents' expectations would be attended regarding the book's production. In this meeting, there were representatives of ICMBio, the community leaders, the presidents of ASMOCUN (Association of Residents of Cuniã) and Coopcuniã (Cooperative of Fishermen, Aquaculture, Farmers and Extractivists of Resex do Lago do Cuniã) and some guests.
Other institutional partnerships were made with cultural institutions from Porto Velho, such as the Casa de Cultura Arigóca and the Instituto Minhas Raízes, which is a cultural and socioenvironmental organization. In addition to that, partnerships with the State Secretariat of Education (SECUD) and with Porto Velho’s Municipal Secretariat of Education (SEMED) were made so that the book could be distributed to state schools, municipal schools, and through the news agency Amazonia Real, which will promote the book.
